Teaching Artist, Musicianship
Aaron Thacker-Woodruff is a seasoned performer, director and educator. Aaron holds a B.F.A. in Musical Theatre Performance from Sam Houston State University and a M.F.A. in Musical Theatre History & Direction from Tulane University.
Aaron began performing at the age of six as a part of the Houston Boys Choir where he discovered his passion for music and performance. While he has professionally performed in theatres around the country his passion for performance has grown into a love of teaching music and performing arts to young people.
While performing in New Orleans, Aaron started teaching part-time for The National Housing Partnership. His afternoons became dedicated to bringing music and performance education to children in low income communities. Through this work Aaron became active in fundraising and secured corporate partnerships, funding performance, health and social education at NHP locations across New Orleans. Concurrent to this work, Aaron was awarded a teaching fellowship and scholarship to Tulane University where he earned his MFA.
Upon completing his graduate studies, Aaron’s teaching passion was fully realized at Dolores T. Aaron Academy in New Orleans East, where he worked as a lead elective teacher and reading interventionist. Through his work at DTA, he developed lessons and multiple school wide performances focused on bridging core curriculum and arts education.
Because of their success with arts integration, in 2016 Delores T. Aaron Academy was honored with the designation of membership to the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, Turnaround Arts. This committee highlights the nation’s best schools known for art/performance education within high risk populations who are honored for closing the achievement gap and providing students equitable access to the arts. During his tenure at DTA, Aaron was presented educator awards for Scholarship and Leadership.
While working for Chicago Center for Music Education, Aaron has taught general music in three partner schools serving almost one thousand students a week. Also in Chicago, he has facilitated programs at Emerald City Theatre and The Metropolis Performing Arts Center. Aaron is thrilled to be a part of the ChiME team!
