what are the objectives for Clap, Sing, and READ!?
In this 5-week session, Ms. Kaylee will use music to bring the story of Silly Sally to life. Students will experience the book through multiple senses as they listen, sing, play percussion instruments, and move to the melodies and rhythms of the text. Throughout the class, we will foster early literacy skills, including phonetic awareness, sequencing skills, making predictions, and identifying connections between words and pictures.
Musically, students will develop a sense of a steady beat, the ability to imitate rhythms, the ability to play percussion instruments, and melodic awareness. All along, they will strengthen their memory and work on fine motor skills. On the last day of class, they will “perform” the book in a unique virtual presentation of the story. Join us for this creative, engaging, and musical story time!
CAn I enroll at any time?
If there are open spots in a class, you can register at any time during the session. Participants will pay tuition for only those classes that are still remaining in the session.
what do children do and learn?
Each Early Childhood music class guides students in playing small percussion instruments, active listening games, singing, and musical movement activities. Repertoire of songs consists of culturally diverse and engaging folk songs, nursery rhymes, fingerplays, and familiar tunes, many of which explore seasonal themes. Classes focus on developing a love and enjoyment of music, as well as early beat, rhythm, and melodic skills, as appropriate at various ages. The curriculum is divided into age groups, and there are no skill-based prerequisites for each level.
What materials are needed for participation?
The teaching artist will be using small hand-held percussion instruments during the class. Students have the option to purchase the same instruments from ChiME ($20 per pack) or to use at home instruments (kitchen utensils, like bowls, wooden spoons, and spice shakers are usually a great substitute). Instrument packs available for purchase from ChiME include 2 rhythm sticks, 2 egg shakers, 1 jingle bell, 1 movement scarf, and a one-gallon bucket that serves as a drum and a container for all other a one-gallon bucket that serves as a drum and a container for all other instruments. The book is optional and can be purchased separately from your local bookstore or online.
