Time To Tango Camp
Summer 2024
Ages: 9-18
Instruments: Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Piano Tango is an art form that is expressed through music, dance, poetry, and as a way of life! It evolved from African and European dance and musical influences which makes it an excellent entry point to a variety of genres. Listed as one of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritages, “it help[s] demonstrate the diversity of cultural heritage and raise awareness about its importance.” Students will learn to perform traditional Argentine tango by studying arranged works and also ‘a la parrilla’ (improvising using lead sheets). They will also explore the deep connection between music and dance by spending time learning basic tango steps and movements. Although traditionally a pair dance, for this workshop, dance instruction will lead participants to experience how music influences movement individually. During the camp, a guest artist (piano/bandoneon) will lead a special workshop and join us for the final showcase, which will feature performances by camp participants as well as a short concert by Tango with Winnie. |
